Earndit Privacy Controls

privacy

As an Earndit member, there’s not much information about you that gets displayed to others on Earndit, not even your followers. However, we are sensitive to the fact that some people are very private and don’t want to expose any info about themselves or their levels of physical activity. We’re happy to announce the launch of some privacy controls on Earndit.

You can now control two different aspects of Earndit from your Settings page:

  1. Control who follows you. People who follow you are able to see the trophies you earn, the rewards you earn and the challenges you enter. This is actually good for the community because your accomplishments serve as motivation to those who follow you.
  2. Control who can view your profile. Please keep in mind that if you join a challenge, your progress in the challenge will be visible to others even if you set privacy controls. That’s the only way to maintain a good user experience in challenges.

Filtering Your Rewards on Earndit

Now that the number of rewards available on Earndit has grown to close to 40 (wow!!), we figured it’d be good to give you a way to easily filter the types of rewards you’d like to see on the page.

When perusing rewards on the “Redeem” page, you can use the filter tool in the top-right of the page (see the red box in the screenshot above this post). This will allow you to filter the rewards by categories such as food, clothing and lifestyle. You can also sort them in order of popularity, or how recently they’ve been added to Earndit, or in order of points needed. Finally, you can check the box to only show rewards that you have enough points for.

This should make finding and redeeming rewards more convenient for you. Please feel free to let us know what you think.

Fitbit recalibration

From the very beginning of Earndit, we’ve been big believers in data collected by devices as opposed to manually entered data. This is for two primary reasons:

  1. Device-collected data is verifiable and more authentic than manually entered data. In order to maintain the integrity of our rewards and challenges, it’s critical that we minimize the potential for people to exaggerate the amount of exercise they do. This integrity is the reason why brands are willing to give you better offers than they give anyone else.
  2. Device-collected data is a better user experience. Manually entering data is like doing homework.

When we first integrated Fitbit with Earndit, it was only possible to earn points for data captured by the Fitbit device. Eventually something changed in Fitbit’s API that made it possible for manually entered data to also come through to us. Hence some Earndit members were able to get points for manually entered data. This is different than the other tracking services we’ve integrated.

We’ve recently changed the Fitbit integration such that points are given for device-collected data only. This was necessary to ensure Fitbit gets the same treatment as the other tracking services. A couple important notes to this change:

  1. If you’re physically active with the Fitbit device yet are no longer getting any points whatsoever, you likely need to re-authorize your Fitbit account with us. You can do this by going to your Settings page and clicking the “re-authorize” link next to Fitbit. Once you do this, your data should come over just fine.
  2. If you’re receiving fewer points than you used to, it’s likely because you were manually entering some of your activities and thus are no longer receiving points for that data.

If you have any questions, or if you think there may still be an issue with your account, please email me directly at andres@earndit.com or click the “Email” icon on the bottom of any page on Earndit (other than this blog).

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we worked through those changes.

A More Simple Login Process

A couple months ago, Jeff Johns joined the Earndit team to help us grow Earndit to its full potential. He brings with him a great knack for product design and a personality that blends very well with ours. Jeff was also an Earndit member long before we ever thought to speak with him about joining the team.

You have already seen some of Jeff’s wonderful work on the site, such as the “Find New” button on the dashboard to look for any new activities, and the default leaderboard that shows on your dashboard (it now defaults to show the people you’re following rather than all Earndit members).

We’re excited to announce his latest development — a super simple login process. Now you can login just by clicking on a tracking service you already have linked to Earndit. For example, if you have your RunKeeper account already linked to Earndit, you just need to click on the RunKeeper icon on our homepage and then click on the “Connect to RunKeeper” button. You no longer have to click the “Login” link in the top righthand corner of the site and input your credentials every time.

These changes also make for a much easier signup process for new visitors to Earndit. It eliminates a couple steps in the process.

In the coming weeks you’ll be seeing several other awesome enhancements that Jeff is working on.

Dashboard Enhancements

We just released a couple enhancements  to the dashboard that we thought you might like to know about.

Previously the leaderboard on the dashboard showed this months leaders across all users, but now it shows “Your Crew” which is comprised of people  you are following.  Don’t fear, the Earndit wide leaderboard is still available by clicking the “All of Earndit” link right above the leaderboard, or by going to the Rankings tab.

In addition we made it easier to find friends to add them to your crew by putting a people search box right below the leaderboard.

Enjoy!

Esther Dyson shows Earndit some love

Esther Dyson has been a very well respected investor for many years.  Forbes even named her as one of the most influential figures in American business.  Recently she gave an interview with Digiday to chat about data and digital advertising.  She mentioned Earndit as a site where “relevant offers are welcome rather than intrusive.”  A screenshot of that interview is below, and you can click here to be taken to it directly.

Managing Your Email Notifications

Whenever we see that you’ve done a new activity, we automatically give you points for it and send you an email notifying you of those points.  We think of that email kinda like a receipt – it’s sent to say “We got you covered”.  However, some people may not want that confirmation sent to them each time they workout.  Hence we’ve now given you the ability to turn off those notifications.  All you have to do is go to your Profile page and click the button to “Off”.  See the screenshot below:

January winners

This is pretty insane, but we have another 3-way tie for the January trophy for most points in the month.  Our three winners were flawless all 31 days, having racked up the maximum possible points each and every day.  Wow!  That’s impressive!

Our winners are Alberto, Rasmus and Deborah.  You can see the glorious trophy on each of their profile pages, plus they’ve also been given 50 bonus points for their accomplishments.  Congratulations boys and girl!  :)

Fitbit now earns you rewards on Earndit

I first learned about Fitbit when they presented at the TechCrunch50 conference in 2008.  For those that aren’t familiar with the conference, it was an annual 3-day event that had a stronghold on the attention of the technology world.  The brightest minds in the industry would speak on panels, while the most promising startups were given a chance to show their dreams to the world on stage.  These startups were competing for a grand prize, and Fitbit was chosen as a runner-up.  At the time I was an Associate with a venture capital firm in New York.  I was so impressed by Fitbit that I reached out to the founders to ask if they needed some funding.  Though my firm wasn’t able to invest, they ended up raising money from one of the most respected venture capital firms in the country, True Ventures (the company also recently raised more money from another top-tier fund, Foundry Group).

Fitbit has developed a compact sensor that you can wear all day long to track your steps, calories burned and even sleep.  The device uses a 3-axis accelerometer to determine your movements.  It then uses the intensity & duration of those movements to determine calorie burn.  It’s a magical technology!  All of this data is then wirelessly uploaded to their website where you can see it in graphical form and identify patterns.  On the website, you can also manually log your food intake and body weight to complete your overall fitness picture.

Because the Fitbit is worn all day long and monitors even the slightest movement, we had to use a different formula to assign points to Fitbit activity.  As opposed to the typical “10 points per mile by foot” we give for other devices, we came up with a unique formula for Fitbit.  In a user’s daily report, their activities are classified into one of 4 buckets:  sedentary, lightly active, fairly active and very active.  We decided not to give credit for sedentary and lightly active minutes, opting to focus on fairly active and very active minutes.  As such, we give 0.1 point for each fairly active minute, and 0.75 point for each very active minute.  While it’s difficult to standardize points across different fitness devices, we feel that we’ve done a good job of creating a way to compare apples to oranges.  We’ll also continue to evaluate our formulas to ensure accuracy.

Finally, I’d like to give a big thank you to Paul Marcum who gave us access to his Fitbit account while we worked on the integration.  He trusted us with his personal data, and for that we are very grateful.

ideeli almost gone

We’d like to notify you of the fact that there are only 3 ideeli rewards left!  If you’re not currently a member of this name-brand discount shopping site, we urge you to act fast so you can join with a $25 credit.  Our members have been delighted with the products they’ve bought through ideeli.

We’d also like to give a big thank you to the people at ideeli for believing in Earndit since before we even launched.  It’s been a wonderful relationship and we’ve been happy to have them onboard.  We hope our members will show them their gratitude by spreading the good word about ideeli and continuing to shop at their site.
