We now support Garmin and EveryTrail

By now most of you have probably seen our new homepage.  Not only does it look different from a design perspective, but it has a couple new logos on it (namely Garmin and EveryTrail).  These new integrations are part of our quest to be device-agnostic and allow people to get rewards for exercise regardless of which device or app they prefer.  Plus we can now give you points for exercise other than running.

For the uninitiated, Garmin is the industry leader in developing GPS devices.  Their line of products for runners is a watch called Forerunner and their line of products for cyclists is a device called Edge.  They have a dedicated website called Garmin Connect which allows you to see a history of your activities and share them.

EveryTrail is a mobile app that can be downloaded to iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and Blackberry phones.  They offer a free version and a paid version of the app.  It uses your phone’s GPS functionality to track your pace and distance, and presents your activities in an elegant format both in the app and on the website.  Please visit the EveryTrail website to learn more.

Thanks to these additions, Earndit will now reward you for running, walking, cycling, kayaking and skating.

New homepage

Old homepage

We always knew we’d have to revamp our homepage to accommodate new services we add to the program.  We also wanted to make it possible for someone to engage with Earndit before asking them to join.  Hence we decided to change the homepage and signup flow together in one fell swoop.  Now newcomers to the site can enter their Nike+, Garmin Connect or EveryTrail login info and immediately see how many points they’ve already earned with Earndit.  Only then are they prompted to join.

We hope you guys will try out Garmin and/or EveryTrail.  We will be continuously adding new devices and apps to the system.  And we hope you guys like the new homepage.

Rasmus Lerdorf has joined Earndit as an Advisor

We are excited to announce that Rasmus Lerdorf has joined Earndit as an Advisor.  For those that don’t know, Rasmus is an absolute stud for many reasons.  He is the creator of the PHP programming language most websites use (including ours).  He spearheads many open source projects and travels around the world to speak at conferences.  He was an engineer at Yahoo for several years, and now he is developing the API for a company called WePay.

All of you have certainly seen his name near the top of the Earndit leaderboard, for he is an avid runner and has been a member of Earndit since our first week.  Rasmus even won the April trophy for most points in that month.

Going forward Rasmus will help us on both the technical side of things and the user experience side of things.  We couldn’t be happier to welcome him aboard.

Brag about the rewards you earn

We’ve now made it possible for you to brag about the rewards you’ve earnd on Earndit.  As you can see from the screenshot below, it is easy to let your Twitter followers and Facebook friends know the free goodies you’re getting from all your hard work.

You can share this either right after you redeem your points for the reward OR from the page you get to when you click on your name in the top-right of any screen (then just hover your mouse over the reward you want to brag about).

I can tell you that we REALLY appreciate you telling everyone about Earndit!

Earndit News Now on the Dashboard

We’ve been asked many times why it’s so hard to find the blog once you’re logged into the site.  We never went out of our way to make it difficult to find, but did agree the blog deserved more exposure.  We utilize the blog and twitter as our main forms of communication and want to make sure it’s as easy as possible for everyone to keep tabs on us, so we’ve added the latest from each to the dashboard.  Enjoy!

Better International Support

A while back we talked about the fact that we welcomed users from around the world even though the site was entirely US centric.  We’re proud to announce that we now have much better support for our international users.  You can now:

  • Select your country
  • See what country others are from
  • Select your preferred measurement units
  • Have “today” be your “today”

To access these new settings head on over to your Profile & Devices page.

As always, we’ve done our best to try and ensure that everything works as planned, but if you come across anything that seems odd please let us know and we’ll jump on getting it fixed.

New Datacenter Move Complete

Over the weekend we migrated Earndit to the Rackspace cloud for our hosting needs.  For any of you that caught our interview at StartupNextDoor you know we’ve been planning the move for a little bit.  We had hoped to do it in a seamless manner, but unfortunately our old hosting provider had an outage that forced our hand into a less smooth move than we had hoped for.  The good news is that it is now complete and all issues appear to have been resolved!  If you do run across something that doesn’t seem right please give us a shout.

In short what this means is that we are now positioned to keep up with the growing community of Earndit users.  So feel free to go tell everyone you know about Earndit without worry of overwhelming our poor little servers :)

Website Enhancements

Harry has been hard at work making some great updates to the website that should enhance your user experience.  Below are some of these enhancements:

  • Connecting with social media.  Now you can login using your Facebook or Twitter accounts (new users can also signup this way).  Just go to your “Profile & Devices” page to connect your accounts.

  • Bragging to your friends.  You can tell your Facebook and Twitter friends about trophies you’ve won by hovering over a trophy and clicking the button that says “Brag to your friends.”  Please keep in mind that you may have to enter your Facebook or Twitter info again in order to do this bragging.  Soon you will also be able to brag about rewards you’ve earned.

  • Leaderboards.  As you may know, there are two leaderboards in the “Rankings” tab.  The one on the left is the main one that determines who gets the monthly trophy for most points.  We’ve added a dropdown menu to this leaderboard so you can see different months.  The board on the right is for you to play with to see how you fare with others based on different time intervals.  We’ve added different time periods to this leaderboard.  Pick the timeframe that makes you feel best.

In addition to bragging about trophies, we are currently working on enabling you to brag about the rewards you’ve earned.  We are also beefing up the trophies so that you can start to see your trophy case filled up with fun distinctions.  For your Earndit profile picture, you will soon be able to use your Facebook or Twitter profile pic.

Go run.  Get rewarded.  You earndit.
